Comic Fiesta 2009 Day 2
[info]jiddo
Wow, today was VERY tiring after all the sketchbook request drawings and talking and shouting (it was just too loud) and selling.. Man. Glad my prints managed to sell. Thanks for the support, guys. Appreciate it, really.

Since it's Sunday the place was just way too crowded. I even forgot to take pictures of what I drew in those sketchbooks! So before it became packed, here are some photos from early in the morning:

Me and a long time LJ friend, [info]madsqueeble

More pics! )

And that's about it. I hope I can find scans or photos of my drawings today from the net soon! Anyway, it's been really fun meeting up with everyone. See you guys again next year!

Comic Fiesta 2009 Day 1
[info]jiddo
Very tiring but also very rewarding.
Lots of fun, lots of new cosplayers, and especially new crowd - it gets bigger and bigger every year! Can't believe it's almost a decade of Comic Fiesta. Has it really been that long?!

Daft Punk!

I had in mind not to accept drawing requests this year because I really just wanted to chill and enjoy the event. Fat chance. So instead I started drawing to [info]amei (AMAZING artist, by the way. She's not even doing it professionally. Taking PhD in Australia even!) as a favour. Once they see you take that brush out it's like every other year again hahah.

The sketch for [info]amei that started it all (image stolen from her LJ. Thanks, Amei!

Fake smile with [info]amei after flipping through her crazy sketchbook boo hoo hoo

The requests continue... )

Be back tomorrow!

Some more CHOKER love...
[info]ben_templesmith
This time, from the Paradox Comics Group... Matt T: Bristol Comic Expo legend Ben McCool finally puts his rather twisted imagination to better use than tell insane stories over curry. A noirish tale that sounds like Fell with a late night sci-fi twist sees a disgraced detective with Alien Hand Syndrome (???) have to catch the uncatchable to get his job back. As the first issue is called Pain I'm expecting McCool to churn out something suitably disturbing, and with Ben Templesmith adding his wonderfully gothic style the end product should match up perfectly. CHEBRUARY- New CHOKER cover
[info]ben_templesmith
Two important links today. CHEBRUARY- New CHOKER cover As Bleeding Cool points out, next February...is actually CHEBRUARY. It's impossible to ignore, what with CHEW, CHASE VARIANT and CHOKER all coming out from Image Comics that month. It's going to be...err...chinsane? And next up, yup, it's been officially announced I'll be down to Heroes Con in June next year. Never been but the organizers are as nice as pie. ( A really nice pie, one your nan might make that's extra tastey, with cream on it even, if that's the sort of thing you're into...you get the idea. )

Introducing My Stats. Tweaks and Enhancements

  1. The search is on: We've replaced our default search tool with one from Yandex, a leader in search engine technology. This means you'll get smarter, more granular results! To get started, enter your search terms and click the Go button to the left of the Find box on the upper right of the LiveJournal header. This will take you to the search landing page where you can further refine by Entries, Comments, People & communities, and FAQs. You can also access the search page directly.
  2. Whitelisting: We've released a new option to help you moderate your busy communities more efficiently. If an entry contains a link to a whitelisted (i.e., trusted) site, it will be posted automatically without need for moderator approval. If a post contains a link that is not on the whitelist, you'll be prompted to approve. To access this option, please visit settings for any community you maintain and select the third option in the Community Moderation box (located in the lower left-hand corner). Click the enable link to custom-edit your community's whitelist, which has been prepopulated with trusted domains. You can manually add or delete URLs in the text box. Please note: If you're the maintainer of an unmoderated community, you may see the radio button for this setting checked, even though it's not active. This is a known issue. Please select whichever option you prefer and click Save Changes at the bottom of the page. If you're happy with your current settings, then no need to do anything!
  3. TMI, dude: We've added some fun FREE sponsored vgifts! You can send up to 50 TMI vgifts to mutual friends (btw, you cannot send free vgifts to communities). If you're a Paid/Permanent user and you want to view sponsored gifts, click Show sponsored gifts on your homepage or visit the sponsored gift page. These vgifts will only be available through Wednesday, December 23rd.

You can view more awesome user content after the jump!

Baroness Cover Work in Progress
[info]ben_templesmith
Baroness Cover
One of the Baroness images I did up for the one-shot from IDW coming out in February. No idea if this is a regular cover or not. There's like ten covers to the book and I only did two. This here's the pencils! Took it from a pose of a lady leaning on something which I uh, turned into a chick in lather holding lots of guns. What can I say. Chicks 'n guns eh?
Baroness Cover
Did all the basic line work with a micron or a Uni-ball pen, or both. Just started filling in the blacks here. This was all done on an 11x17 inch bristol board, white. Planned on lots of watercolour on this piece.
Baroness Cover
Filling in more blacks. A bit of a bugger considering her costume.
Baroness Cover
Black inks all done!
Baroness Cover
Water colour washing begins
. Baroness Cover
Lots more water colour and even a splash of red for the Cobra logo. Everything is generally just tonal greys though, since the real colour happens on computer. Just thought it'd be nice for the actual original piece. If you dig it, it should actually be for sale sometime soon over in my section on www.splashpage, my art agent bloke, Mark Hay, who handles all my work for hire stuff. Drop him a line via the site if you're into the Baroness as he should be getting all the pages/covers I did for the book in his hot little hands sometime soooooon. ( I promise, Mark! ) Baroness Cover
Almost finished. Just some standard tones, some dodge and burn and faded a bit of photo nose with airbrushing on the face. BUT, I was told the eyes were a little too asian ( the original photo, the lady *was* Japanese...so...
Baroness Cover
...I rejig the colour, add in some slightly different eyes. This one goes down much better.

Bits from Around the Globe- The Last 8 weeks
[info]ben_templesmith
Well, six weeks, considering I've been in the US and sick with a virus the last two. These are in no particular order...

Fun with red neon lights at the VIP bar...

Emma, Antony, some git and Mr Diggle. Photo by the always awesome Jock. This was the afterparty for the ThoughBubble Festival up in Leeds. One of the best/busiest cons I've ever done. Short though, only one day!

Fun with red neon lights at the VIP bar...

Shifty bastards. Hatching plans.

4am Pizza.

Essad Ribic, Andy Tong, Al Ewing and a few others. I didn't get any sleep at Leeds. These people know how to drink and they just don't stop!

Thoughtbubble Festival

You could say we had a good turnout. Infact, I WILL say we had a good turnout. This was for the panel I did at Thoughtbubble.

Thoughtbubble Festival

My line didn't stop for 6 hours. Quite possibly the most signings I've done in one day apart from maybe a really busy day at SDCC. It was insane.

Thoughtbubble Festival

It's not a monkey, it's an ape. Took this photo just to ensure I hadn't taken drugs, that it actually did exist.

Thoughtbubble Festival

Lucky me, I never had a reputation to uphold.

This was actually a rather sweat laden "wizards wig".

Things you do in a pub at 2am.

Up high in a building during a meeting. I would get NO work done if this was my office.

NYC

I ended my NYC trip in this bar. We even got a free round because the barman was a comic guy and had too much fun overhearing our comic book bitching/stories. He's sworn to secrecy though.

Philip Ridley And I.

Just before my little comic book chat thing in London for Comica. ( Phil is the director of Heartless, among other things )

London MCM Expo

Drinking with Declan, Al, Jock and some crafty bugger named Dingle.

London Expo is always a blast. Definitely planning on going back next year.

Comic Fiesta 2009
Date: 19-20 December 2009
Venue: Sunway Pyramid

Be seeing you guys at our booth this weekend?

Hi
[info]kimmychu
Yeah, it's been a while since I made a public post. Just wanted everyone visiting this LJ to know I'm alive and well! I'm mostly on Facebook now. Been working a lot on a graphic novel project, and I'm really happy with its progress. :) Been dealing with lotsa real life stuff too, but I'm doing fine. Better than ever, actually.

Here's the soundtrack I've been listening to while working on my graphic novel:

It's a track entitled The Strawberry Field, from the Snow Falling on Cedars OST. Beautiful piece of music.

Hope things are going well for all of you. :)

KRE8TIF! : Malaysian Creative Industry Awards 2009
[info]jiddo

I was away for almost a week in Malaysia to attend the inaugural creative industry awards (aside making presence at my cousin's wedding) held at the Royal Chulan hotel, KL.

Being away from home I had no idea how huge the event was until I set foot there and saw myself the big names involved throughout the digital content conference.

I was one of the finalists for the award night. I could never be happier with my decision to bring my beloved mother along the moment results were announced. My Demi Kala piece won Best Digital Artwork (Experimental) and Intipati bagged Best Digital Comic!

The interview with Astro went on air the next day but boy was I glad that I already flew back to Singapore so I didn't have to see myself stuttering in awestruck.

Malaysia has started to recognize the presence of digital art industry and I can only hope for more of such events in the future. Thank you, MSC! Can't wait to see the turnout for the coming year.

LiveJournal Major Notes: Notification fix, Snowflake cookie avalanche, LJLimerick, holiday vgifts!
[info]theljstaff wrote in [info]news

Tweaks and enhancements

  • As a number of you reported, a service interruption impaired sending and receiving notifications for a couple of days. This was due to an avalanche of snowflake cookies. We've removed the free snowflake cookie and unclogged the pipeline. Timely notifications should resume shortly. Please note that there's a backlog in our queues, so you'll be getting earlier notifications first. For more details, check out this post at [info]lj_maintenance.
  • In anticipation of the new year, we've embarked on a self-improvement kick to boost our backend (pun semi-intended). This will allow us to offer you a holiday promotion in the next few weeks (yes, we're listening and working very hard to make it happen). We sincerely appreciate your continued patience and support.

Holiday vgifts are here!

We've added some fantastic new vgifts to help you spread holiday cheer. We also hope you'll honor AIDS Awareness Month by purchasing virtual red ribbons. Priced at $2.99, we'll donate 100 percent of gross proceeds to IAVI.org (the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative) to support the development and global distribution of an affordable HIV vaccine.

Introducing: LJLimericks

We cordially here do invite you
To craft a fine limerick. Might you?
Each week, a new theme,
Then a poll, that's our dream
Winner posted on news to delight you!

In honor of all the brilliant writers on LiveJournal, we've created a brand new community: [info]ljlimericks! Each week, we'll enter a handful of limericks into a poll (which we'll tuck snugly under an LJ-Cut). The winning poem will be published in the following newsletter. In addition, the author will receive a virtual blue ribbon! If you have the time, come drop us a rhyme. Please keep the "Nantucket" stuff on the downlow, since this is a youth-friendly community. Our first prompt is: Insomnia in winter.

Photos of the week

We're back with more incredible images from our global photography community. Congratulations to [info]sempre_marseeya, who has been awarded a virtual blue ribbon as the winner of our second [info]lj_photophile poll.

We hate to squelch your creativity, but, as a courtesy to other users, please post only one photo at a time and keep the main photo no larger than 350x350 (so images display properly via mobile and on friends pages). You can link to a larger image and/or post photos under a cut. Just so you know, we select photos for the poll blindly, based on user comments and staff feedback. Please continue to vote, comment, and, of course, enjoy. You can check out the week in pictures and view more awesome user content after the jump!

CHOKER Previews

CHOKER Previews

CHOKER Previews

I was severely humbled when I realized how much space Image had given Ben McCool and I for CHOKER's debut issue. 6 bloody pages! Huge thanks to Eric, Joe and the gang for the opening promo kick start there.

I've been a bit ill since I got back from the UK, this bastard virus will not die, but I got a copy of Previews while over there and took some quick snaps. Basically, you can go to your friendly retailer type person and show them this stuff ( I'm sure they'll see it anyway ) and tell them you'd like to make sure you get a copy reserved for your good self ( if so inclined ) and that the order code they need to use is: DEC090342

And then, magically in February, you will have one in your hot little hands. Promise.

Yeah, you gotta harp on this stuff now as it's the time to order the damn thing and I do like to pay rent, feed my kitties and such mundane things.

Baroness Previews

I've also got a G.I. Joe Baroness one-shot, look for it out in Feb from IDW! Written by Marc Andreyko. Since it's G.I Joe, it pretty much orders itself really. Hope I did decent by the Franchise. Apparently Hasbro really dig it because it's a little different.

POPGUN ANTHOLOGY cover progressions

Not to mention of course, The Popgun Anthology #4...yeah, looks like February is kinda Templesmith month. Didn't plan it that way, honest! Most importantly, it's order code is: DEC09 0379 This code gives you much powah with which you can order it. Definitely check the Popgun link for a whole swag of info on the book.
